A Debt of Nature
This
pine tree was no aged forest giant,
No
storied marker of Texas history; It looked nothing like a Doric column,
Or a temple sacred to golden Apollo,
Or a cathedral scented with ancient prayers -
Since no cathedral features viscid bark -
Nor yet again a sentinel or spire.
No, it was but a good loblolly pine,
Discreetly failing after long service,
And, taking tendrils of wisteria
Down to a most surprising end for them,
On a quiet day it measured its length
And sighed its completed story to God.
