Love in the Corner Booth

Somewhere along US 96

His ducktail haircut from 1957
Fading to white, her voice without makeup
Sharing scripture verses and something about
Her latest operation and her miseries

Outside along the row of pickup trucks
A green-haired waitress smokes a cigarette
The fuzz of her Harley-Davidson coat
Pressed flat for love against the window glass

They’ve got a sale on tires down at Wal-Mart
Along the four-lane Christmas passes by
