Dispatches for the Colonial Office

1970

When I came home I was asked by a boyhood friend

“I haven’t seen you lately; where have you been?”

I’m still wondering about that

The 1970s - poem

The 1970s

A giant Hannibalian elephant
Descending from the alps slowly to die
In the valley of the Po, pricked about
Bellowing outrage in its agonies

Of leisure suits and suburban barbed wire
Recorded on minutes of missing tapes
As polyester doubleknits await
A bump-up in the daily gasoline line

Hubris rotting in the dust of the age
And did you hear they’ve raised the minimum wage?
