Listen to Your Starets

Each follows a starets: books, music, art,
News, living in the past, forming committees
For the regulation of one’s neighbors,
Manufactured anger and resentment,
A centering prayer centered on one’s self.

But

A starets true would lash with whips of words
These idle idols and idler idylls
Out of the Temples given each of us,
Lives not to grasp, rather to give away,
Sunflowers harvested in September.
